Welcome to Holland

In my SED 104 class today, we read a poem by Emily Perl Kingsley. It describes the unique experience of raising a child with a disability. I think you all should read it! Very touching. :)

Sheila,

Click on the link she provided to read it. Because I did not give birth to Sekoe, I never "planned that trip to Italy." So, there is no way I could ever know or truly understand that feeling, emotion or experience.

Some would say for me it's the opposite. Some would say I actually did planned my trip to Holland while the rest of the world planned for their trip to Italy. Yet, living in Holland and experiencing Holland, even as a step-mother, has a completing unique set of experiences.

I wouldn't change or trade a day of it for anything in the world. I often wish I could be more like Sekoe in so many ways. His Deafness has taught him so much that has shaped in many positive ways. The challenges it brings has made him into a stronger and I believe an incredible young man. Of course, I'm his mom :-) I would say that, right :-)!

The interesting part is - he wouldn't change his life in Holland for a life in Italy if given the choice. He's grateful to live in Holland. I wish he could tell you that story himself. I may find a way for him to do just that this semester.

I read this in my SED 104 as well, I agree that it really helped me try to understand what parents have to go through. It is not a "bad" thing, but definitely a difficult trip. I liked that it pointed out the brighter side, that you just adjust and go on.
