Joshua and the Birds

My dad is a mechanic and this week he had been rebuilding a wrecked truck that belongs to some family friends. Over the weekend he finsihed the truck and and we returned it. The family consistes of a child with autism named Joshua. He is about 12 years old. We visited with them and he is such a joy to be around! He is facinated with animals. The family has tens of exotic birds and unusual pets. His mother said that he loves to stay in that room and it is calming to him. I thought that was kind of odd because the birds made a lot of noise, I did not find it relaxing at all! Also, he likes to sit in there and draw his animals and displays the art all over the house. Anyway, I just wanted to say that Josh is a wonderful child and I love to be around him!

Different things calm different people, but I agree that does sound odd. Perhaps he has had birds since a child? If it is something he has become used to having around he may find it calm because it is familiar and consistant

They haven't had the birds for more than a couple of years I don't think but I'm not sure. I just thought it was kind of interesting :)

Many with autism find something specific they are just really fascinated with or that they are great at doing. I met a boy a few years back who loved colors. He could name the entire rainbow and every single color in between. He would come to me everyday at work to let me know that he knew every color I was wearing that day, pointing out every detail of my shirt, pants, shoes, and even headbands. It's very interesting to see what calms and excites others.
