SED Question

I was working at a school function the other night and a little girl came up to me and said "I'm special Ed!" I just kind of smiled at her but the more I thought about it, the more questions I had.  What would make this child go around and announce it? Would her parents be constantly telling her that she is different? or maybe the school is telling her that she is different? I really don't know how I feel about this.  I'm not a special ed major so maybe one of you could shed some light on what children who are in Special Ed classes are told to say?

I also don't really know how I feel about this. I mean, I am glad that she is embracing her differences rather than hiding them and being embarrassed. However, I don't like that she is saying "I am Special Ed." I don't know if she came up with this or if she is repeating it from someone else. If someone else is saying this, I would not be happy that they are calling this girl that.

My older sister has autism and she started noticing she was not the "same" as other children. She noticed she rode a different bus and was not in the same classes. She asked us, and I have found honesty is the best policy. She is beautiful the way she is and I wouldn't change a thing about her, but we did tell her she has autism. We explained why her education was the way it was. Maybe it is a similar situation, I don't know but I don't think it is not necessarily a bad thing; every situation is different as is the child.

That is really odd to me since I work with special needs adults almost every day and have not ever heard them refer to themselves, or one another as "special Ed". The people I work with are with a nonprofit organization that really stresses community inclusion and making everyone feel equal. Maybe the little girl has been raised with a different perspective of her life and likes to tell people about it, which is never a bad thing.

Wow that is odd. I agree I am glad she is confident enough to say "I am special Ed" however like you I am wondering where she is hearing this..
