Bridge to a Silent World

I was reading an article, "Bridge to a Silent World" about how this little girl, who was deaf, was isolated from her family. Because she was isolated, she ended up being trapped in her silent world. Her environment at home was impacting her language development. The little girl had difficulty communicating to her parents. Her parents didn't understand sign language and punished her for "misbehaving" by yelling at her when they really misunderstood when the little girl was communicating to them (using ASL). Peg, the sign language teacher, was teaching the little girl's parents to communicate to her by using ASL instead of just pointing and yelling at the girl. This helped improve the family's environment at home and their communication.

My mom works with children with disabilities. She has several websites that she gets some information on to give to the parents with children with autism. This is one of the ones i like the best..

WORD WORLD on PBS

LINK: Word World

I do a lot of babysitting, so let's just say I have watched PBS more than a few times in my adult life. I have always thought the show Word World was a great show for kids! I think it is a fun and interactive way for children to watch television for entertainment but at the same time learn vocabulary, phonics, and word meanings all at the same time. I have attached a link to this post of the episode, "Word World: Happy Birthday, Dog!" I think this episode is a great example everything this show has to offer. I love how they build each word, sometimes even sounding it out using the phonics, and then the word forms to look like it's meaning. For example, the word B A R N would form into a large red barn but in the shape of the letters that spell the word. Just watch, it's hard to explain! I bet some of you all that have kids will like this show! It's on PBS! Enjoy!

Phonics Song!!

I was looking through Youtube, and came across this fun song and video. I love the way this song is put together! I really like the slow melodic pace, and the pictures that correspond with the letters and sounds. I think this could be a fun song to teach or just have on in the background for Kindergarteners. :) Watch and sing along if you want!!

Teaching Kids about Idioms..

LINK:  Teaching Kids about Idioms :)

I found this youtube video on teaching children about idioms. In this video, a teacher explains how the books of Amelia Bedelia can help children to learn about idioms. I thought this was a fun interactive activity to help your class learn about idioms. Watch, learn, and enjoy!!

Kayla Dooley :)

Hello! My name is Kayla Dooley and I am from Lexington, KY. I have a wonderful husband, Phillip Dooley. Together we have 3 cats (Nova, Karma, and Sunni), 1 dog (Rocky D), 1 turtle, and 1 saltwater fish. Phillip graduated from EKU in the fall of 2011 with a Bachelor in Environmental Science. I am expected to graduate from EKU in the spring of 2014 with a Bachelor in Elementary Education and Special Education LBD. I am excited for the future, and cannot wait to become a teacher. I have attached a link to one of my favorite you-tube videos, hope you enjoy!!Link: Ouch Charlie! That really hurts!

Play Time With Nephew

My little nephew Raphael is 3 and loves to play basketball. When getting him excited to play a game with me I yelled “Im gonna whoop your tail in basketball!” His eyes widened and he said “ No your not!” and ran out of the room. He then came back with his toy Tigger and said “ Whoop Tigger’s tail I don’t have one! See?” Then he turned around. This interaction showed figurative language and the not so firm grasp on literal meanings of certain words.

I am volunteering this Thursday for special education students in a talent show.  If anyone is interested and would like to volunteer, I have pasted the email below.

Talent Show this Thursday @ Folk Center; be there by 5:30pm, will be finished by 8pm! Maggy will be the person you’ll need to check in with.

Daycare

I have another story from the Day Care I work at! I just got a new child in my classroom who has been taken in my a foster parent recentley. The little boy is mexican and speaks english and barely understands any english that is spoken to him. Him being just taken away from his mother and father he is very scared acting, and cries almost the whole time he is in the daycare. The only time he stops crying is if he is being held or sitting in a lap.Recently he has been doing better and at dosent cry as much. He talks little but when he does it is in spanish. I am starting to know the main words he says frequenlty and he is starting to understand little things such as "time to clean up" or "inside voices." This is becuase the other teacher and I have created non verbal communication with him by using hand gestures ad also prounounciating our words better for him to understand it!

This past Friday  I volunteered at the Y with a class from EKU that is focused on adaptive gym classes. It was an amazing experience, I just showed up with one of my friends that is in the class and they put me right to work. I helped a child work on different skills such as kicking and catching a ball. If any of you all are interested in volunteering just let me know and I can give you more information.
