Midterms

Good evening everyone! I can't believe the semester is half way over already! I hope everyone does well on their midterms!

For the reading response, I chose, Language Deficits in Students with EBD. It was interesting to read the article and find out more information than I initially knew.

I think I'm going to do the "Creating Language Rich Preschool Classrooms" for my reading response. I have skimmed over the article and it seems full of interesting information. Hoping to knock this thing out today!

Very Interesting

Regardless of beliefs and views of the LGBT community, there are LGBT students.   Bullying is very real and the highest suicide rate for youth are those who are LGBT.  This article had some interesting points to consider.

Reading Response Question

I chose to do the Narrative format for the Reading Response. Should I clearly separate and label the "connections to the class" section from the "summary/new information" section? Or should I keep it all as one flowing paper?

Thanks!

Joshua and the Birds

My dad is a mechanic and this week he had been rebuilding a wrecked truck that belongs to some family friends. Over the weekend he finsihed the truck and and we returned it. The family consistes of a child with autism named Joshua. He is about 12 years old. We visited with them and he is such a joy to be around! He is facinated with animals. The family has tens of exotic birds and unusual pets. His mother said that he loves to stay in that room and it is calming to him. I thought that was kind of odd because the birds made a lot of noise, I did not find it relaxing at all! Also, he likes to sit in there and draw his animals and displays the art all over the house. Anyway, I just wanted to say that Josh is a wonderful child and I love to be around him!

I volunteered to help at a special needs talent show in Berea.  I truly love every single participant; they are the best bunch.  I heard a lot of parents complain about testing, IEP, and the education system.  Having a sister who has autism myself I can relate.  As educators, you want the best for your student.  But there is also a lot of school policies that can prohibit education, and there are policies that are necessary and positive.  It gives me a lot to think about; what needs to be done to effectively help the student?

I am wondering if our test will still open on the 8th as schedule says or will it be delayed a bit.. I am just a little curious... Thanks

observations

The other day at observations I worked with a child who i considered special ed. He was in a collaborative classroom and they were working on writing a letter to the principal about getting new play ground equipement and using persausive arguments in order to convince her. The child had very short term memory and therefore cant apply anythig he wants to say to paper that makes direct since becausehe has a struggle with spelling. The child is very smart and understands and can orally explain his answers but uses random letters to spell the words he is wanting to say when he writes it. As he would write it I couldnt quit make out what he was writing becuase of the spelling he used. I would ask him to read it for me and he would be able to read write from the paper what he wanted to say. It was a interesting observation that he could make out what he was writing with the way he was spelling even though it was normally random letters thrown together. BUT we worked through it, correctly spelt the words and he wrote his persausive letter along with all of his other peers :)

Reading Response

Has anyone started their Reading Response assignment that is due next week?  Having any difficulty?  Questions?  Why not post thoughts, comments, questions here to work through those together.  I'll also pop in and comment if there seem to be common questions not answered by each other.

GRADES

I am continuing to work on grading your Tests.  All will be graded by class next Monday.  If you have any questions about how I graded a particular item, do not hesitate to contact me.

I will also be posting grades for BLOG participation for August/September.

Don't forget to be working on your Reading Response Assignment.  It is due October 8th via Blackboard

Kittens :)

If there is one thing that you just have to know about me, is that I am absolutely obsessed with kittens.  I don't just like them, I love them.  If the whole get married and have children thing falls through?  I'll just have 1500 cats and not complain.  But anyways, the other day I was looking up kitten videos the other day on YouTube and found this adorable clip :)  Enjoy :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtX8nswnUKU
